How do WiFi antennas work?

First of all, frequency wavelength plays a critical role in the construction of the antenna. However, other factors such as frequency range ,channel width and spectrum are as important as frequency wavelength .
For example, A 5 GHz antenna will not work with a 2.4 GHz signal and vise versa. If it does work, it will not work properly and the range will be terrible. Therefore, if you are buying an antenna o, make sure it’s designed for the correct frequency range .That is very important.
A WiFi antenna provides three things to a radio transmitter:
*Direction
*Polarization
*Gain

Direction refers to the shape or angle of the transmission. Polarization refers to the orientation of the electric field component of an electromagnetic wave with respect to the Earth’s surface. Gain is the amount of energy increased by the RF signal.
